Stonea then, at 2m OD, cannot in any sense be called a hillfort. Rather, it is an Iron Age fen island type fort, however much of the same principals of hillfort still apply.

It is worth noting that the date of Stonea’s construction and subsequent adaptations are later than the main phase of hill fort building which occurs some 200 years earlier.
